Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet. For fifty years, "GUN" have kept "Shadow" in a sticky, frozen state deep underground in a top secret facility. Suddenly, he wakes up and punches his way out, forcing the director, Krysten Ritter, to interrupt a family barbecue to call in "Team Sonic". Our blue hedgehog, his best friends Tails and Knuckles, have settled into a peaceful life with Tom and Maddie, but they soon realize they need to step back into action. Their shock is huge when they find out their new super-fast and super-strong enemy is another hedgehog, not quite as blue as them. Who is he? What's going on? Why does he hate humans so much? Everything becomes clear when his boss turns out to be the ultimate baddie, Robotnik, only a bit rounder than before. Even though they're matched or outmatched, the team tries to form their own alliance. But can they hold on when the odds are so stacked against them? There's not much danger here, and what starts as a fun series of action-packed adventures quickly turns into a sentimental mess as the story pulls the characters into cheesy, predictable situations. I like a good villain, but in this case, Jim Carrey's over-the-top performance is so obvious that it's clear from the start he won't win. This sequel, which is also a prequel, starts with some fun writing and plenty of modern, sarcastic references that make you smile. There are many nods to movies like "007", "Fantastic Four", and the "Avengers", but in the end, it all feels a bit too shiny and predictable. It looks great on the big screen and passes the time well for a holiday movie, but overall, it's a bit too similar to other films for my taste.
